Promoting Sustainability…

SGC February 2007 MEMO

Reading an article written by Jon Frank, an eco-gardener he states, “It is important to have a vision of where you want to go and what you want to achieve.” In addition, “Get a roadmap. A roadmap is an indispensable requirement when starting a journey to an unfamliar destination. Once we have established our starting point and our final destination, the roadmap helps us plot our course of action.” Sustainable Green County has a vision of focusing on the inteconnection of the rural, with the urban, for a healthy vibrant, community. We want to support our local farmers and producers who grow our food, which sustains us. In taking action, we have partnered with the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture to launch a campaign called Buy Fresh Buy Local. After two community meetings, we have now formed a steering committee. What dedication! Subfreezing temperatures and heavy snow did not postpone farmers, businessmen, nonprofits, and passionate participants. We are mapping a successful campaign. In addition, SGC is sponsoring a new farmer’s market at 6th and Peoria in Centennial Park, in the Pearl Neighborhood, and it will be called The Pearl Farmer’s Market. This could be a hybrid market, in that we are encouraging community gardens, students, and urban gardeners to particpate. Starting in April, SGC will be taking our monthly meetings to the farmers market and park, having outdoor educational exhibits such as a solar cooker demonstration, composting, and more. This roadmap has the potential to radically change the way we live, eat, work and play! We welcome your participation. Contact us for more information.
