We are holding workshops to help others learn about building with cob
and strawbale. We are holding cob/straw bale workshops that are planned for March or
April 2009. We will be building small cottages to provide housing to single
moms and battered women. There are also a few out buildings to
complete also. This is a 10 day workshop that will cover beginning to end
construction of cob/strawbale cottages which is fairly new concept that I would like to use for their R value of up to R70 for our sometime frigid climate. Campgrounds will be provided to all students.
The fee for this course is $500 with a deposit of $250 to be sent to
reserve your spot. This fee is to cover our costs for the foundations and for our
instructor. We get our homes built for our women, and you get to learn about the wonderful building technique of cob and strawbale together!
We will be doing instruction on the old ways of mixing with feet and
also the newer way of using a backhoe and cement mixers so this is a course that is more up to date with technology. Free Wanderer’s End Farm T-shirt to all attendees!

Oklahoma Food Coop Seeks Producers
Attention Oklahoma Farmers & Ranchers!
Producing for a LOCAL marketplace can be an additional source of revenue for your farm or ranch. Here’s our story. I could sell a TON of Oklahoma grown potatoes every month at $1.25/lb. Also 2500 pounds of corn on the cob, 300 heads of cabbage, 1100 pounds of tomatoes (both paste and slicing), 600 pounds of carrots, 600 pounds of fresh peas and beans, 300 bunches of cooking greens, 600 heads of lettuce, 725 pounds of onions, 300 pounds of summer squash, and 500 winter squash. I need 750 pints of berries, 300 pounds of apricots, 600 pounds of apples, and 300 pounds of pie cherries. And 100 pounds of cornmeal, 400 pounds of dried beans, 660 gallons of milk, 80 pounds of hull-less oats and 700 dozen eggs.
That’s what my “grocery list of unmet demand” at the Oklahoma Food Cooperative looks like based on membership surveys in the fall of 2007. Our sales increased more than 100% each year, 2003-2007. In 2008, we expect to sell a million dollars of local food and non-food products, and by 2012, we will sell one million dollars a month–if the production for the local market is there.
Greenbuilding Resources List
Natural building includes many types of methods and materials: adobe, strawbale, cob (clay/sand/straw), papercrete, bamboo, rammed earth, and others. Natural building is defined by the use of plentiful local and marginally processed natural materials to build a structure and its systems (water, energy, waste, recovery) with the most neutral ecological footprint. Natural building also includes the footprint of the building over its entire life span. Natural building costs are usually far less than conventional building, but labor costs (often including the owner-builder’s own labor) are higher.
Green building also often includes engineered structural materials such as ICFs, SIPs, green roofs, FSC-certified lumber, etc., as well as eco-friendly finishing materials such as cellulose insulation, low-VOC paints, recycled-glass countertops, and bamboo flooring. Green building focuses heavily upon using less energy after construction is complete, reducing energy use for the lifetime of the building. Green building costs are often perceived to be higher, but when planned well, may be less than conventional building.
This list has been compiled by and for Sustainable Green Country, a non-profit volunteer organization based in NE Oklahoma.

SGC February 2007 MEMO
Reading an article written by Jon Frank, an eco-gardener he states,”It is important to have a vision of where you want to go and what you want to achieve.” In addition, “Get a roadmap. A roadmap is an indispensable requirement when starting a journey to an unfamliar destination. Once we have established our starting point and our final destination, the roadmap helps us plot our course of action.” Sustainable Green County has a vision of focusing on the inteconnection of the rural, with the urban, for a healthy vibrant ,community. . .
